What a brilliant facility. I have recently been a student on the LeTTOL course and have been encouraged to use WebLinks. As e-Learnig Co-ordinator at Carlisle College I would really like to use this software or something very similar and if you could help with this is would be very much appreciated. Fiona

SCIENCE YEAR NEWSLETTER - ISSUE 46, Week ending Friday, 7th December 2001 RECOMMENDED WEBSITE OF THE WEEK - SPECIAL MENTION And finally, Science Year's Links co-ordinator Katie Walsh, would like to give a special mention and professional doffing of cap to the researcher and co-ordinator behind Sheffield University's own Science Links Library, which she describes as "awesome" - and reckons must have been an awesome load of work to put together too... Check out their url treasurehouse at www.sheffcol.ac.uk/links/Science/ . But make sure you come back to the Science Year site, you hear? SCIENCE YEAR NEWSLETTER - ISSUE 47 , Week Ending Friday 14th December 2001 when we mentioned (and praised) the "awesome" links site at www.sheffcol.ac.uk/links/Science/ , we attributed all that good work to Sheffield University, when of course we meant to say, Sheffield College. Huge grovelling apologies for getting that wrong. Fortunately the newsletter-writer responsible is now on the waiting list for a brain transplant and will hopefully become a more accurate typist in the new year also... Meanwhile, apologies again.

The Reporter, Volume 3, Issue 6, Summer 2000, enquiries@sheffcol.ac.uk, said on 13:19:25 Jan/04/2001:

The Sheffield College has beaten off competition from more than 600 other schools and colleges to win the Teaching resources award in the Post-16 category of the Becta/Guardian School and College Web Site Awards 2000. More than 650 schools, teachers and learners from across the UK came forward to create a record number of entries for this year’s awards scheme, and a shortlist was drawn up, with three days of judging by technology in education expert panels. The awards were set up to celebrate excellence in schools and colleges through their use of web publishing and to encourage creativity. Originality, new content and new participants in web site communication. They aim to showcase the best of school and college web publishing and encourage schools and colleges to contribute to the National grid for Learning. They are sponsored by Compaq, ICL, RM and Apple Xemplar. Chair of the Sheffield College Governing Body, Michael Entract, said, “I am delighted that the College has won this prestigious award. It reflects well on our commitment to using the internet to support learning, and it is great recognition for the effort put in by the Weblinks team over the last three years.” Owen Lynch, Becta Chief Executive, said: “I am delighted with the high number and high quality of entries to this year’s Web site award scheme. The record number of schools and colleges coming forward is indicative of the important role that Communications Technology and the Internet, is now playing in education.” “The judges were very impressed with the level of creative design and technological motivation shown by those shortlisted and had a difficult time choosing the winners. All the winning sites will be showcased on the National Grid for Learning."

Post Sixteen Science issues (a Journal of the Association for Science Education), No.32, October 2000, 20, Website Reviews for post-16, sandsmith@ase.org.uk, said on 20:01:59 Nov/15/2000:

I am not usually keen on link sites; I find it frustrating to get to a site and find no content. However, this is a very good site, firstly this is British rather than American and secondly each link has a brief overview of what it is about, thus saving considerably on surfing time. There is also a search function. Weblinks claims to contain 2113 links (I didn’t count them), the science section contains a large number of these organised into the different sciences and other related sections such as organisations and museums.

Jim Crawley, Norton Radstock College near Bath, www.nortcoll.ac.uk , jcrawley@nortcoll.ac.uk, said on 21:55:51 Jun/29/2000:

Excellent site, which I will recommend to, and use with Cert Ed / PGCE and FAETC Stage 1 and 2 students, as well as other college staff. Is it ok with you if I encourage staff to send you links as they find them ? I was going to try to construct and run a site like this myself, but as you've done such a good job of it I don't need to now.

Emma Rand, Department of Biology, University of York, er13@york.ac.uk, said on 20:27:07 Jun/26/2000:

This is a really well organised collection of links and the site design is marvellously uncluttered. I often look for ideas, examples and applications for Maths and Statistics to teach Biology Masters students and have found the range and quality of the links very useful. I especially like to be able to recommend web based material to students because, unlike library books, they can always access the information and look at it for as long as they want. In addition, many of the sites listed are tutorials allowing students to practice what they have learnt and get immediate feedback.

Sam Saunders, University of Leeds, Project Officer with Education-line, J.P.Saunders@leeds.ac.uk, said on 08:43:20 Jun/20/2000:

1) The appearance and speed of this site is excellent. Nicely uncluttered, fast to load and very easy to navigate. 2) The combination of browsing by subject area and a search box was helpful to me. I was looking for my own resource (of course!) which doesn't neatly fit any of the categories. No problem, the search facility found it straight away. 3) There did seem to be a large number of links - and that's always useful to me. Until very recently FE has been poorly represented in other information services. I will bookmark the site and refer to it regularly.

Dr Rick Marshall, rm@oakham.rutland.sch.uk, said on 08:49:33 Jun/14/2000:

One of the best resource web sites I have seen and used. Most of my favourite physics sites are here, so I can substitute one book mark for many. Particularly useful are the abstracts, and most important, a date when the link was added. I wonder how many others are trying to reinvent the wheel you are so successfully rolling?

Andrew Harmsworth, aph@theleys.cambs.sch.uk, said on 21:50:44 Jun/02/2000:

Love this links site - very well laid out. I have given it a priority bookmarking.

David Sang, sang@bognor.demon.co.uk, said on 09:47:43 Jun/01/2000:

Two best things about this site: the links are organised under clear, obvious headings so that you can go straight to where you want; the brief descriptions make it obvious what you will find there, including the level the site is appropriate to. Great!

The College has been working hard on generating content for its LINKS site. Go there now and browse the content which is organised by subject. As it says - there are 1256 links to choose from. The site has a useful search facility. One resource that I found through the resource is the Educational Conference Listings 1999 from the British Education Index.

Kate Butler, Lecturer, Department of Visual Communication, RMIT University, Australia, kateb@deni.net.au, said on 20:54:48 Apr/27/1999:

The layout is clear and easy to follow, though it can be a bit slow going through all the categories. I look forward to using this site more often as it has a good range of links with only a slight bias toward British sites (understandable). It will be important to ensure that the links stay active as it would be discouraging to have too many broken or outdated links. I like the fact that the links are provided by a range of people as this increases their diversity and gives one incentive to keep checking the site to see what has been added.

I am gradually checking through the sites available for Biology through Weblinks and finding the Biochemistry useful, though perhaps more for undergraduates than A level. I am recommending the URL to students, particularly those with the Internet at home. I have also got the Modern Languages staff very excited about their links, and they have used several sites. French have downloaded some grammar sheets and Spanish ask if they can have similar?

Sheffield College offers a good set of links on its WWW site which covers a wide range of curriculum areas. At the time of writing the site is particularly strong in mathematics and science links but it is well worth a visit whatever your subject area. The links list is searchable,  which is a bonus, and you can add your own favourite links. (monday 13 July 1998)
